GENERAL INFORMATION & FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Sapphire Pro slide redorderWe produce digital slides at 4096 lines of resolution using the MGI Sapphire Pro film recorder. We use Kodak EPP 100+ daylight-balanced 100’ roll film for vivid, natural color. We color calibrate the film recorder at least two times a day for optimum color and density control. We mount all slides in Pakon or GEPE plastic mounts and sleeve them for shipping.

PROPORTIONS

croppedslideThe proportional size of a standard 35mm slide is 3 to 2.
If your images do not proportion exactly to the 3 to 2 proportion of the full slide, the empty space will be filled automatically with black. You can also specify white if it is more appropriate for your images although we don’t recommend it because white can be distracting during projection.

COLOR TESTS

We create color test slides and ship them to you via USPS First Class free of charge. We offer free test slides to facilitate good color communication between your screen and our slide making equipment.
We provide two free slides per customer. To test our service we recommend that you send us one of your best quality files and one of lesser quality and size. We will create the slides and send them back to you at no charge. Please keep in mind that free slides do not take priority over paying orders so production of free slides can take from a day to a week depending on our workload.

MAKING SLIDES FROM CONSUMER DIGITAL CAMERAS

To make a good digital slide from your camera you would need to send us the largest file your camera can produce. No less than a 2MP file. Most cameras can save images in multiple sizes to maximize their storage capabilities. When you photograph your artwork, be sure to use the best quality setting available - often referred to as Fine or Extra Fine setting.

Most consumer cameras store the captured images in a format called JPEG or JPG. This format saves a lot of storage space in the camera but it also degrades the quality of your images. For instance, a 3MP file which in it’s pure form is 9MB, can compress down to almost a tenth of a MB when saved as a JPEG file. The camera’s internal software decides what part of the image is the least important to the human eye and discards what considers extraneous information from the photograph. The next time your image is opened, the discarded information is digitally reconstituted to the best of the program’s ability. In most cases the process works fine and the results are perfectly acceptable for viewing and printing. However, if you open and save a JPEG multiple times you are essentially decreasing the quality of your image by a factor of two, three and so on until your images become unusable.
If you need to do work your images, save them in TIFF format if you have it available as an option. This format takes more space but maintains the integrity of the file allowing you to work on your images without the worry of degradation.
If you are not planning to work on your images and just need slides from them send us the Jpeg files as the come out of your camera.

MEGAPIXELS!

Digital cameras come in a variety of Megapixel configurations. One Megapixel refers to one million pixels (often rounded for marketing purposes).

A digital slide can hold about 11 Megapixels worth of information or 32 megabytes.

The list below shows how much information your digital camera holds on one picture and how well our equipment handles the information for slide imaging:

2MP = 1600x1200 pixels or 5.49MB (slides will look a bit soft but usable)
3MP = 2048x1536 pixels or 9MB (slides will look ok. Good enough for most purposes)
4MP = 2272x1704 pixels or 11.1MB (slides will look better. Again, good for most purposes)
5MP = 2592x1944 pixels or 14.4MB (Slides will look very good.)
Above 5MP = Slides will look great.

MAKING 35mm DIGITAL SLIDES FROM PHOTOSHOP FILES

Your images must be in RGB. Flatten files to eliminate layers. Delete any existing masks from the channels palette. If the images are in 16 bit color, change them to 8 bit.
Save your files in the native Photoshop format (PSD), Tiff or quality 12 Jpeg files. If you are familiar with color profiles, download ou
r ICC profile for the film recorder. If you are not familiar with color profiles let your images be in their native color profile.

Your digital files should not exceed the maximum pixel addressability of the film recorder, as shown in the following graphic. The numbers below show the maximum pixel resolution for slides. If your files are smaller than the indicated size do not interpolate them upwards. Leave the sizing to us. Our imaging software will have better results than Photoshop.

Film recorder maximum resolution
4096 x 2730 pixels = 32MB RGB

Note: In order to get a good slide it is not necessary that your files are as big as shown. Please read about minimum resolution below.
